Ceva continues its Streptococcus suis videocast series with a focus on diagnosis

Ceva Animal Health continues its three-part educational videocast series on Streptococcus suis with a second session dedicated to one of the main challenges surrounding this pathogen: diagnosis.
Entitled “From detection to diagnosis of Streptococcus suis”, the session will feature Dr. Virginia Aragón, PhD, from IRTA-CReSA.
Why is diagnosis so complex?
Streptococcus suis can commonly colonize healthy pigs, which means that detecting the bacterium does not necessarily confirm that it is responsible for the clinical signs observed on farm.
For this reason, diagnosis requires careful consideration of sample selection, testing methods and the interpretation of results.
What will the session cover?
Dr. Virginia Aragón will explore the practical challenges involved in determining the clinical significance of Strep. suis, including:
- How to select appropriate samples;
- The diagnostic tools currently available and their limitations;
- How to interpret positive results;
- and the role of bacterial characterization in understanding disease.
The session will provide veterinarians and other swine professionals with a practical framework to support better diagnostic decision-making in the field.
When will it take place?
The videocast will be broadcast on Wednesday, November 4, at 17:00 CET / 10:00 CDT / 16:00 UTC.
As the session is pre-recorded, it will also be available on demand after the initial broadcast.
Part of a three-session series
This episode follows “Understanding Streptococcus suis in Today’s Swine Industry”, featuring Dr. Marcelo Gottschalk and Joaquín Álvarez-Norambuena, and will be followed by a final session focused on prevention and control.
Together, the three videocasts provide a progressive overview of Streptococcus suis, from understanding the pathogen to diagnosis and disease management.
The session is aimed at swine veterinarians, producers, consultants and animal health professionals.
